Sri Lanka raises USD 200mn from dollar bonds

Sri lanka has raised over USD 200mn from dollar denominated bonds from mainly middle east banks. The bonds have a tenor of three years and are named Sri Lanka Development Bonds. This is the first time SLDBs have been sold in large quantities abroad.

The bonds are usually sold among domestic investors including banks who are eligible to hold dollar assets. On friday liquidity in Sri Lanka's interbank markets surged with the foreign inflow. The inflow of funds would be favorable on the LKR which has depreciated in recent times. Another bond sale is planned by National Saving Bank which is to raise 500mn with five year tenor bonds.
